Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Metal roofs being louder than shingle roofs is a myth. The amount of noise in your home during rainstorms is more dependent on your insulation than your roofing material. 

Fun fact: Allen Stoltzfus, owner of Equity Roofing, has a standing-seam metal roof with no attic and has noted no difference in noise level during storms (even with a newborn in the home, the ultimate test!) 

Most projects are completed within a few days, depending on size and complexity.

Metal roofs with quality material, such as high tensile steel, don't usually dent easily. Lower-grade metal or thinner panels, however, are more prone to dents. 

A metal roof alone does not guarantee lower energy bills. Energy efficiency depends far more on insulation, ventilation, and proper installation than on roofing material alone.

That said, certain underlayment systems paired with metal roofing can help reduce attic heat in summer. If your roofer installs a reflective underlayment with an air gap, you could see improved cooling performance in warmer months.

Oil canning is a waviness or rippling that can show up in flat metal panels. It is purely cosmetic and does not impact performance. 

Oil canning can be caused by: 

• Thermal Expansion

• Fastening too tightly

• Uneven roof decks

• Thin metal panels

• Dark and shiny paint colors

• Manufacturing issues

Oil-canning is never 100% preventable, but you can take steps to decrease the chances of oil-canning and its appearance.

It's possible to install metal right over your existing shingles, provided your roof meets the following requirements:

1. Your existing roof should have only one layer of shingles.

2. The plywood or wood decking beneath the shingles needs to be in good shape (no rot, damage, or sagging).

3. There shouldn't be any moisture problems or structural issues in the attic.

If your roof meets these conditions, installing metal over shingles can save time and mess by avoiding tear-off.

Just keep in mind: any dips or waves in your current roof framing will show through the new metal. Structural problems need to be fixed first.
